The main thing that not a lot of people start out with is, most people think, okay, you either have a website or you don’t. And it kind of reminds me of a statement that a friend once said, she’s like, “There are two kinds of people in the world, Mari. So there are people who own staplers and people who don’t own staplers”. I’m like, “Yeah, that’s true”.

So that’s like saying there are two kinds of people in the world; people who have websites, and don’t have websites. But that’s not really the whole truth. And what I realized is that most people just think they need to have a website. It’s like a thing that you have to do to be in business.

But they don’t really know that it’s super important to have the right kind of website for your business, and to actually match your website to your business model. So most of the internet marketing training that’s out there is teaching people how to build what I call list build and authority websites.

And list building authority websites are great at the right time in your business when you have a list build business or an authority business. So what I teach is that there are actually four stages of business development, starting with the blue sky stage.

And the blue sky stage is when you’re still trying to figure out your unique value for the world and your niche. And so you’re kind of in an exploration space stage and you’re not really making consistent money that you’re usually making less than $20,000 a year.

But what happens is that most people at that stage start to build a website. So they waste a lot of time and energy creating something before they really defined what they’re all about.

And if they’re getting opt ins and leads are only getting a few, so then if they’re spending all this time trying to get opt ins and leads and nurture those leads, they’re wasting time when they could be making higher ticket sales in a more direct manner.

So I actually don’t recommend that people build a website at all in the blue sky stage of business growth, because you’ll be rebuilding the website in about six months to a year anyway, when you figure out what your business is all about.

And if you do insist on building a website because you just need that for the confidence that it gives you knowing that people want to check you out and they’re asking for it? I recommend building a really simple one-page site.

And when you’re whether in blue sky or you’re in what I call, call me business. It’s called a call me business because this is the stage where you get the majority of your customers by getting on the phone with them, that’s why it’s called a call me stage of business.

And most everyone who goes into that stage of making money while they sleep past to the call me stage first, where they’re really able to talk to people individually and understand their value and what people are going to buy.

So I’ve got the expression, which is before you can make money while you sleep, you’ve got to be able to make money while you’re awake, right?

And so many people try to jump right into becoming this instant, overnight global authority online, but they haven’t had real conversations with real people to figure out, you know, what do you really do? And how do you do what you do in a way that nobody else does.
